GUE/NGL News. Sakharov Prize: Parliament must recognise voices of Arab Spring.

The GUE/NGL Group will put forward its candidates for the 2014 Sakharov Prize this afternoon in a meeting of the Parliament's Human Rights committee.

The Group supports artists and activists Mouad Belghouate (Morocco), Ala Yaacoubi (Tunisia) and Alaa Abdel Fattah (Egypt), all symbols of the 'Arab Spring' for their part in challenging regimes in the fight for dignity, social justice, democracy, and freedom of expression.

Mouad Belghouate (26) is a musician and an active member of the February 20th Movement. He has been sentenced to jail 3 times in less than 3 years. Ala Yaacoubi (26) is also a musician and has suffered harassment and police violence due to songs deemed outrageous by the Tunisian police. He has been convicted several times because of these songs. Alaa Abdel Fattah (33) is a blogger and activist who has been jailed three times for having protested for civil liberties in Egypt.
